چکیده

The manuscript presents so far unpublished high-quality aircraft measurements of CO2, CO and CH4 from three large wildfires and one prescribed fire in mixed conifer forests of the northwestern United States. From these measurements, the author calculates emission factors (EF) for these species and analyses the relationship between observed modified combustion efficiency (MCE) and EFCH4. The author uses fuel consumption and MCE measurement data from 18 prescribed fires described in literature to statistically explore the linear relationship between the ratio of heavy fuels consumption and MCE. By combining the average MCE measured in this study with linear EF-MCE relationships found for temperate conifer-dominated forests in other studies, wildfire EF for 14 additional species are estimated. The author concludes that fuel composition is an important driver of variability in MCE and EF, and that wildfires, due to a higher fraction of large diameter fuels consumed, predominantly burn with C243

Combustion efficiency and emission factors for wildfire-season fires in mixed conifer forests of the northern Rocky Mountains, US

In the US, wildfires and prescribed burning present significant challenges to air regulatory agencies attempting to achieve and maintain compliance with air quality regulations. Fire emission factors (EF) are essential input for the emission models used to develop wildland fire emission inventories. Most previous studies quantifying wildland fire EF of temperate ecosystems have focused on emiss...

Interactive comment on “ Fire vs . fossil fuel : all CO 2 emissions are not created equal

The manuscript by Landry and Matthews documents how CO2 emissions generated from global wildfires differ from those generated by fossil fuel combustion in terms of atmospheric fraction and temperature. The authors use a coupled model to assess this, and also show temperature effects from altered land surface albedo. There are some potentially interesting and useful results, including the net vs...

Determination of levoglucosan in biomass combustion aerosol by high-performance anion-exchange chromatography with pulsed amperometric detection

Atmospheric particulate matter can be strongly affected by smoke from biomass combustion, including wildfires, prescribed burns, and residential wood burning. Molecular source tracer techniques help determine contributions of biomass smoke to particle concentrations if representative source profiles are available. Various wood smoke source profiles have been generated for residential wood burni...

Numerical Study of Reduction of NOx Emission by High Temperature Air Combustion Technology

A numerical study on Nox emission from an industrial furnace utilizing high temperature air combustion (HTAC) technology was done. The basic concept of the regenerative burner including heating a diluting of fresh air by flue gas was implemented in a two-dimensional furnace model. Governing equations in conjunction with a turbulence model and an overall chemistry model were solved using an impl...
